Balance

Balance training is a way to bring to the surface multiple ideas for students to work with.  Is a student favoring one foot?  Are their ankles individually strong?  Where does a student feel heavy or light?

I use Indo Board balance boards specifically for these tasks.  I like to get students disoriented in a safe environment.  Balance training helps me to create the context of situational disorientation.   An Indo Board puts the student immediately within their body.   Students must control small muscles that are not often used in order to truly balance themselves.  For any type of student,  balance training seems to  put them completely within their body.  This forces students to discover control mentally and physically.

Student Testimonial

Janna & Chloe Gates

Zach worked with my daughter Chloe for about a year when she was 13 and at the Intermediate skating level. At that time she was skating five days a week for 2-3 hours a day, she had just started working on her triple jumps. To get a better feel for Chloe and her skating level, Zach came on several occasions to watch her practice. He then geared her yoga workouts to certain spins or jumps she was working on - flexibility, strength and balance were improved greatly. He also was very focused on counteracting her repetitive movements to help prevent injury. Taking it the next step, Zach spent time each day dealing with the mind of an athlete - helping her to lessen the intensity, encouraging her to try new things and re-form her expectation of perfection, and meditating to increase focus and help alleviate stress  at competitions.  If Chloe was struggling with a jump and all wound up
about it, she would walk out of Zach's studio in a completely different state of mind, ready to tackle that jump from a fresh perspective.

Zach is still an integral part of Chloe's training - we remind each other of his words, his great workouts and how fun he made it all. We have not yet found another trainer that is able to connect with
Chloe and challenge her in the same way since he moved.  We both would highly recommend Zach for other ice skaters and other athletes; we think he sets the bar a little higher for all trainers!
