I do not remember a time when swimming was not a part of my life. I have been a casual and competitive swimmer. Throughout my childhood I swam as part of a team, but it has always been the individual aspects of swimming that make it interesting for me. Swim coaching is an amazing opportunity to work with students in a medium I find so natural. To teach students how to improve their breathing or stroke technique is incredibly gratifying. Swimming also encourages breath and body control. If you cannot breath properly while moving the body during a swim workout, your workouts will be labored and less effective. When a student learns how to connect the movement with the breath, then they are swimming. It is this connection that I love most about swim coaching. I have been an open water swimmer and surfer in Hawai'i as a student at the University of Hawaii. Surfing, free diving, and racing, have all taught me respect for the Ocean. | ![]() |
